10. You have played that song every week since 1999.
9. They don't know the song.
8. The Key of the song is too high or too low.
7. The music is too loud or too soft.
6. The worship leader is doing to many voice inflections and the melody can not be followed.
5. They have not been taught that it is ok.
4. They don't like thier voice/they don't like to.
3. They have not engaged thier hearts and minds and strength.
2. They just came for the donoughts.
1. They are hurting and don't feel like it.

this is probably too elementary - but, another reason - and I think the most important one... "they don't WANT to sing!" Which, actually, I think is more accurately stated as "they don't really want to worship..." this is a deep topic, but someday we can chat about it...

Dandy,

Perhaps, but just because they are not singing doesn't mean they are not worshiping....If in fact your theology of worship is more about being a living sacrifice than music.

Some peoples demenor does not allow for this expression to flow freely. However, I always make the anology of a husband and wife. Just because it may not be in my 'demeanor' to even say the words "I Love You' doesn't mean it doesnt need to be said. And often.
God does not need us to express ourselves to understand us. We do. So we sing.

Howdy,

Two things... first - you've got to remember to put that "comment link" at the end of your posts! You're driving me batty here! LOL...

Okay, second - I know what you are saying about God hearing our heart and that singing is not "proof" that we are worshiping. However... One of the most common excuses a lot of we church goers use is the phrase "only God knows the heart." Let me ask you a question - if you had tickets to this Sunday's game (you know, the BIG one) and invited me, and we had 50 yard seats about 20 rows back (is that good?) and we were part of a much larger group of your friends - say, 20 in all, and all of you were leaping up and down in the air and showing your obvious delight in how well your team (I'm not naming names) was playing - and the whole time, I remained seated, arms crossed, yawned, watching you and your friends go nuts... eventually you would ask me a question - you would ask me what was wrong. And if I said to you, "Hey, David, back off - this is just the way I show my fan appreciation..." you'd think there was something wrong with me.

God does actually crave and desire our full worship of Him and that actually does include singing to Him - it's really not an "option" as we like to suggest. At least, not in scripture. Or, more honest - not that I can find.

Thanks for the dialogue!

I agree full on that God desires and craves our full worship of him. I love to worship with my entire body including hands raised, full voice, and I have been known to do the baptist shuffle now and then. I do this because he deserves it, and that is real and true in my life.

All that I am really trying to say
is that if people are not worshiping in thier daily life, (which includes adhearing to the command of singing}, then why would or should they go nuts sunday morning.
Worship comes from a greatful heart and I never want to contrive or force visable expression from a congregation I stand in front of because I will be held accountable to being true and leading the congregation in Spirit and Truth worship of our awesome God.

Maybe it is just because I don't like football! :>

Hi David, just checking out your blog.
Good stuff.
This one cracks me up. Well, partly funny, and mostly sad but true. I didn't see any mention of polka music though...

David --

I just stumbled across your blog. I love your thoughts on worship music (I play keyboard in my church's worship team), and these 10 reasons were particularly interesting to me. I'm passing this link along to the rest of our team. We're often a bit frustrated by the blank faces that confront us on some Sunday mornings.
